The Niagara Penguins of Brock Universities Hand Cycling Program
Since January 2019, the Brock Niagara Penguins have been running hand cycling classes for people with and without a disability. In partnership with The City of St. Catharines, and the equipment from the Shelley Gautier Para-Sport Foundation, the weekly classes ran inside, with the bikes on trainers, with an instructor leading the class. The classes were fun and a great workout. As soon as the weather cooperated, the group was given the option to cycle outside on the trails instead. The bikes were also used on the Niagara Olympic Club track on Sunday afternoons in the month of May and June, giving another weekly option to cycle. There were 10 riders registered, with only 8 bikes available, the riders had to at times take turns, if everyone attended. The program ended as of June 20th, 2019 for the season.
Penguins will have the bikes out during the 1 week Para-Sport Camp in July at Heartland Forest, and will restart the weekly classes in January 2020.
